Physical Environment:
The Walker Gallery is for the general public to view both traditional and contemporary artworks. The gallery is sectioned into different rooms each room displaying work from a set period. There are some maps around the building that guide the visitors to each exhibition but each room naturally leads through to the next (through the centuries).
The rooms are well spaced out, the painting being on the walls of the room and the centre has benches or sculptural works related to those on the walls.
The problem with this building is that it is in Liverpool and I am unable to get there for the next few weeks. Also it would be difficult to go back to the building for more information time and time again as it is so far away.
The Online Environment:
The online environment will be aimed at people who like artwork but maybe cannot access the gallery for whatever reason. It will display the gallery's current exhibitions and provide information such as information on the artist and the art movements involved in the piece. It would also include links related to the artists featured and their style, perhaps even links to other galleries displaying other work by these featured artists. The website would be designed to make the user feel like they in the walker gallery, they would be free to navigate through the rooms as they would if they were actually there. Thumbnails would be used of the images which will enlarge when selected bringing with it the information on the artist and the piece. If it is a sculpture there will be a tool to rotate it. The website would need to be updated when the exhibitions are changed. I would be very happy creating this website as the Walker Gallery is my favourite art gallery, I go there whenever I go home in the holidays and I always wait in anticipation for the John Moores exhibition. A problem that there may be in creating this website is that I am unsure of the gallery's policy with the use of cameras, if they are against people taking pictures of the works then they may not like that each and every piece will be accessible online through the website. This could be solved by putting a watermark through the image but that would go against the purpose of the website by ruining the view of the artwork.
